History and heritage

The village of Prayssac was founded in the 8th century around its church. In the 13th century, the Bishop of Cahors ceded the commune to Arnaud de Béraldi, Lord of Cessac, to settle his debts. Prayssac obtained its charter in 1280 and thus became a trading town renowned for its fairs, which still exist today. The village is also the birthplace of Jean-Baptiste Bessières, Marshal of the Empire, born in 1768 and died in 1813.

Prayssac's heritage is rich and varied. The 13th-century Château du Théron is listed as a Historic Monument. The Church of Saint-Barthélémy, rebuilt in the 19th century, is also worth a visit. The area surrounding the village is home to several dolmens, testifying to human occupation dating back to the Neolithic period. The "Dolmen Trail" allows visitors to discover these remains, including the Bertrandoune Dolmen, a listed Historic Monument.

Marked hiking trails allow visitors to explore the surrounding landscapes. The village has a well-kept and accessible town center, with shops, services, and an art-house cinema.

The weekly Friday morning market is renowned and was voted "Most Beautiful Market in Midi-Pyrénées" in 2019. In summer, a local producers' market is held on Sunday mornings, offering quality local produce. Cultural and festive events are offered throughout the year, such as flea markets, concerts, exhibitions, and themed festivals.
