Albas-la-Jolie is a picturesque medieval village located in the Lot department, in the Occitanie region, about 20 kilometers downstream from Cahors. Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Lot Valley, it offers spectacular views of the river and the Cahors vineyards.

A rich historical heritage

In the Middle Ages, Albas was a fortified citadel, the residence of the bishops of Cahors. Albas Castle, dating from 1262, has undergone several alterations over the centuries. Today, only vestiges remain, including two monumental gates, testifying to its prestigious past.

The Saint-Étienne church, rebuilt at the end of the 19th century on top of an earlier Romanesque church, stands proudly in the village. Nearby, the 13th-century Maison du Pal once served as a fortified entrance gate. Today it houses a free museum tracing the history of the village, including its role as a river port for Cahors wines.

The Tuscan Garden: a haven of peace

Opened in 2019, the Tuscan Garden is a 400 m² space inspired by the Italian Renaissance. Located below the former bishop's palace, it offers breathtaking views of the Lot Valley. This garden, decorated with cypress trees, lavender, and a fountain fed by water from the castle, is a place of relaxation and meditation. Outdoor performances are sometimes organized there during the summer.

Hiking and outdoor activities

Albas is an ideal starting point for hiking enthusiasts. The Caminar association offers regular walks, particularly along the towpath, the Payrols stream and the Souleillat. These hikes offer breathtaking views of the river and the surrounding landscapes.

The banks of the Lot, lined with poplars and maple trees, are also a popular spot for fishing, picnicking, and water sports. A pontoon allows you to launch canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards.

Local life and events

Albas is a lively village, particularly lively during the summer season. The local guinguette offers concerts, shows and convivial meals, while flea markets are organized in July and August. The village also hosts cultural events, such as concerts and photography activities, strengthening its community spirit.

In 2023, Albas-la-Jolie was awarded a star in the Michelin Green Guide, highlighting its efforts to preserve and enhance its heritage. This distinction reflects the municipality's commitment, supported by local initiatives, to offer visitors an authentic and enriching experience.
